Owning your own business, starting up a new venture or keeping up an existing business can be a little like navigating a ship. Sailing the SS Entrepreneurship out into the ocean can be a calm and exciting adventure but it can also be a turbulent, exhausting and risky one depending on which way the wind blows. Unpredictability can lead to waves of emotions ranging from excitement and accomplishment to fear and doubt for what’s ahead. At times, it can feel like you are being weighed down by responsibility like an anchor tethering you to the ocean floor. Fear, stress, anxiety and doubt are just a few of the challenging emotions that can leave entrepreneurs feeling like they are out at sea without a life preserver.
In his article Are Entrepreneurs “Touched with Fire”?, Dr. Michael Freeman, MD, from the University of California San Francisco, surveyed 242 entrepreneurs, and found that 72 per cent of them self-reported mental health concerns.
At Reset Zone, we understand these feelings and frustrations all too well. As a start-up business, we are also in the ocean of emotion; that is why we want to offer a lifeline to our fellow business community through our app that provides tools, tips, and techniques to help navigate through challenging emotions and reset to a state of calm. In addition to our emotional wellbeing app, we wanted to introduce you to world-class speaking coach, Sarah Hilton, from Spoken Advantage in London, Ontario, who offers another valuable resource for business owners called the TRI Group Speaking Bootcamp.
Statistics from Brandon Gaille’s blog in May 2017, 15 Fear of Public Speaking Statistics, showed that 74 per cent of people suffer from speech anxiety, which results in a 10 per cent impairment on wages. As entrepreneurs, it is vital that we don’t let this anxiety cripple us from optimizing our maximum earning potential, and driving our business forward, whether in sales, marketing or awareness.

In May 2019, Reset Zone hosted Sarah Hilton’s TRI Group Speaking Bootcamp, a workshop that not only helps members take their speaking skills, video presentations and trade-show exhibits to a professional level, but also provides a community where best practice and learnings can be shared. The event, hosted by Reset Zone in Richmond Hill, Ontario, was open to local entrepreneurs and business owners.
What a successful workshop! Six hours of amazing speaking tips, creative suggestions, and deeper dives into one-on-one advice on how to improve the message that we want to send when others visit or engage with our business. A diverse group of business owners came together, each offering a unique product or service, from the launching of a tasty energy treat to speakers wanting to spread their message of mental health or wellbeing out into their community. Sarah masterfully facilitated evaluations for the speakers willing to share their business pitch or speech with the rest of the group. Everyone participated in the evaluation process giving the speaker a variety of valuable feedback points to take back to their business, marketing or communications planning.
Our participants had the opportunity to showcase their trade-show booths, and as a group, we discussed creative and innovative ways to be unique and bold in the messaging, purpose and swag of our business. Trade-show exhibits and booths can often be uninteresting and ineffective, where the average passerby scans your table for the free swag and moves on without really understanding or caring to learn more about your business. That’s why it is important to stand out in the sea of banners, free pens and clothed tables using Sarah’s eye-opening tips and tricks.
The event wrapped up with a discussion on video presentation tips, like what to wear and what not to wear, what to say and how to move on camera versus on stage. This discussion was followed by an inspirational and moving speech from our Reset Zone founder, Heather Skoll.
Overall the day was a huge success; participants left feeling like they had more tools to help them overcome their speech anxiety along with new and creative ideas on how to take their messages to new levels.
One of the key learning’s that I took away from the day is that entrepreneurship does not need to be in isolation. When everyone comes together in community and collaboration, great ideas flow and everyone benefits.
As you set your ship out into the blue ocean of business, try to stay above the waves and reach out for a lifeline when you feel the swells are getting too rough. The Reset Zone app and TRI Group Speaking Bootcamp both offer ways to navigate tough emotions and challenges as you sail out into the open seas with your business.
